Vaikunta Ekadasi will be celebrated at the Sri Venkateshwara Temple on Friday, December 29th. The Shukla Paksha Ekadasi, (eleventh day after the new moon) in the month of Marghazhi (Dec 16- Jan 13) is observed as VaikuntaEkadasi. It is also referred to as Moksha Ekadasi or Mukkoti Ekadasi.
It is believed that the doors of Vaikuntam, Shri Narayana’s abode, is open on this day during the early hours of the morning referred to as Brahma Muhurtam. One who walks in through the Vaikunta Dwaram (the doors of Vaikunta), will be blessed with Moksha, liberty from the cycle of birth and death. Temples open the Northern entrance as ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’, on this special day to its devotees. General practice is that this entrance will be open only on Vaikunta Ekadasi. At the Sri Venkateshwara Temple, devotees can walk through the Vaikunta Dwaram and have darshan of Lord Narayana on this auspicious day.
Once, when Lord Vishnu was resting, a demon by name Muran, took advantage and harassed all the living beings. To save them, the Lord’s power in the form of a woman by name ‘Ekadasi‘ destroyed the demon. Lord Vishnu’s boon to Ekadasi was that whoever fasts on that day will be liberated from the circle of life and death.Hence, this is one of the most important days in the Hindu calendar, to worship Sri Narayana.
Observing fast on this day is equivalent to fasting on all Ekadasis during the year. On this day, it is essential to do two things – one, to observe complete fast, and the second is to spend the day in singing the praises of the Lord. By complete fast, it is meant that one should observe fast without drinking water even, if possible. The important part of the observance is to sing His praises whole-heartedly, thereby feeling close to the Supreme.
Na gaayatryaa: param mantram
Na maatu : para deivatam
Na kaasyaa: paramam teertham
Na ekaadasyaa: samam vratam
~ There is no mantra above Gayatri, there is no God above one’s mother; there is no sacred river superior to the Ganges in Kaasi; there is no Vratam equivalent to Ekaadasi!
Please join us on this auspicious day and offer your prayers to protector of all, Sriman Narayana!
Om Namo Bagavathey Vasudevaya!
